At last, a new camera

I’ve been talking, contemplating, debating about buying a proper camera for a long time. Had been thinking about the Nikon D90, then the D7000 came along. I was getting close to going for the D7000 but it’s a pretty pricey camera and I wasn’t sure if bought it would it end up just gathering dust. Then I was looking through my photo library and realised that a lot of the photos that I enjoyed taking and sharing were related to my running activities. I know a few people with very nice (expensive) cameras who don’t bring them out because their worried about them getting damaged or they’re simply too cumbersome to bring along. I started to look into tough, rugged compact cameras and after some research I went for a Sony DSC-TX10.

The main appeal of the TX10 is it’s compact size. It also doesn’t look like it’s rugged competitors but apparently it’s well able to take a good knock, dust and water (5m). It cost ¥30,000 (Euro 250) so not that expensive. I plan to bring it on as many running trips as possible. “The best camera is the one that you have with you”,  and all that.

I took these few pics today on a hot and sweaty 16k on the Tamagawa. The panorama function is pretty nifty. On the downside: it’s a bit slow at times, capturing and saving images, esp video. Doesn’t have GPS like many of it’s competitors. The interface is also only in Japanese. More and more of the manufacturers seem to be doing that here to try and deal with grey imports/exports. I saw an international model in the same shop for ¥10,000 more.

I’d still love to get a proper camera, I’m especially excited with all the Micro 4/3 stuff going on, but for now let’s see how much I can get out of the TX10.
