Music for Japan poster

I was contacted recently by a Japanese friend who lives in Galway. His name is Yutaka Shimizu. He told me he is organising a musical concert with a Japanese chef in aid of the Japanese Red Cross and would like some help designing a poster. The event is being held in Galway on 11th June so there wasn’t much time.

I gave myself an evening to come up with some ideas. Japan offers a huge source of well recognised imagery to work with, but the flag, in particular offers a lot of visual possibilities.

I sent the options on Monday night. My preference was for the simple musical note poster. I had thought about writing some rationale to help support it, but I was tired and in the end just sent it and went to bed.

When I woke up I had an email saying. “Perfect! let’s go with the musical note one. Thanks for the great job.”

Quick, decisive and grateful – the perfect job. All too rare usually.

I hope the concert is a great success, and I’m looking forward to seeing a copy of the final printed version soon. A couple of my other designs are below.

The whole subject of designers response to recent disasters has been the subject of much debate recently. Especially the response to the Japanese quake/tsunami. My opinion is if the intention is genuine and either funds and/or awareness is raised then it’s all good.
